MYP 5 Debate: Designing Life – Should We Genetically Modify Humans?

Can science change the future of humanity by changing our DNA? And where should we draw the line between preventing disease and designing human life?

As part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), our MYP 5 students explored these complex questions in a debate on human genetic modification, examining both its potential benefits and its ethical implications.

Drawing on scientific knowledge and research, students considered how genetic technologies could help prevent inherited diseases, while also questioning the risks of creating “designer babies” and the possible long-term consequences of altering human DNA for future generations.

The debate went beyond science itself, challenging students to consider the ethical, social and global dimensions of a rapidly developing field. They had to evaluate evidence, examine different perspectives, build well-reasoned arguments and respond thoughtfully to opposing views.

This is the kind of learning at the heart of the IB MYP: connecting subject knowledge to real-world issues, encouraging independent inquiry and developing the critical-thinking, communication and research skills students need to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Because in IB education, learning is not just about finding answers. It is also about asking better questions, challenging assumptions and understanding the impact our decisions can have on others.

So, should we genetically modify humans? Our students explored the arguments. The question remains open for debate.
